<p>Kalahandi (Odisha) [India] Aug 6(ANI): A debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide in Odisha's Kalahandi district, by consuming poison.</p><p>After the incident on Saturday, he was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he died during treatment on Sunday.</p><p>According to his daughter and a close relative, he took a loan for cotton farming in his four acres of land, but due to heavy rain, the crops were damaged.</p><p>The farmer believed he would not be able to repay the loan, which forced him to take the drastic step.</p><p>India is an agrarian country where 70 per cent of its people are dependent on agriculture. Farmers' suicides in such a scenario are even more worrisome.</p><p>Last year, the country saw farmer suicides mostly in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Jharkhand.
